Doodles and oodles

A sketch I found that I did in Romania of Thunder. I had recently at that point read Darwyn Cooke's adaptation of Richard Stark's novel 'The Score' and liked the use of negative space when the main character confronted a stalker which I tried out using my character. Looking at it anew the attacker looks smaller than he ought to in the foreground and should be much bigger and the lightning could have been better to make it more coherent. Little lessons to learn for next time.

These pages are sketches that me and Diana did whilst at an evening service. The cat wizard is a character I have in mind for a graphic novel and appeared briefly in the 24 hour comic. Diana sketched Harold who plays the keyboard for the songs at the service.

Finally a sample of my poor attempt at life drawing. Though it was challenging to draw them in my illustrative style rather than the usual academic way I would normally go about drawing from life. I hope that if I continue to try and do this it may inform my visual style to be coherent and anatomically correct.

Dangerous streets

Today's sketch was originally just this nice young lady and then the background and the shadowy guy came later. I felt I haven't done a gangster/film noir image in a good while so it was nice to come back to it. Also I think the time has come to try a different colour now...orange has been used enough.

One more thing!

Open publication - Free publishing - More adaptation  Remembered that I made some digital comic versions of my previous projects, so thought I post them up just before I head off to Romania. The top one is the 'Jack and Jill' comic which for those who don't know it, is a film noir adaptation to the classic nursery rhyme. Below is a story that was part of a collaborative effort in making three different stories that cross over at specific points. This one is my story of tragic love in the backdrop of 30's Chicago.

Break the Glass

Here is another splash page image featuring LT Thunder giving another crook a hard time, though I have yet to create an interesting story round this character, but I am having more fun with doing this little poster images of him, though I still have that short comic of him that needs to be more finalized.
In case you are wondering what I am now up to I am going about adapting the Raymond Chandler novel 'The Big Sleep' into a graphic novel. Might have some character images to show as I progress. Enjoy.

Birth of a hero...

This is the final image to showcase the three agreed genres that I will be tackling for most of the year.
This piece I am particularly pleased with in it's outcome, and also a good few of you may recognize the hero character is indeed Lt Thunder, whom I made in first year but never got round to making a story for him, but now I have, and I hope it to be an engaging story.

The Big Sleep: Lash Canino

Eddie Mars' hitman, Lash Canino who does all the work that Eddie doesn't want to dirty his own hands with. Though I found it odd that Chandler gave a big tough guy a purring voice, I dunno I never imagined a hitman to have a purring voice...

Plans

Well so far im working on a comp for the group blog equine cranium, where this weeks project is film posters and im doing empire strikes back with presenting a comp as my final as what i would want to do as a final would take longer than a week especially as i have other things to do in my life. Also gonna put out there that I'm gonna be doing 2 maybe three projects over the summer them being the star wars project that i mentioned though im not sure i may still go through with that and the other two are both comic book projects one being a western story and the other a detective story though that will be done during my third year at uni but i am gonna start with the necessary research.

Anyways here is a photo of the progress of my comp so far, and I'm quite pleased with it so far. Quite inspired by Drew Struzan's own rendition of the same film.

The cowboy story is yet to be finalized but i shall be getting on it at some point, maybe either later in the week or next week i should have a story by then till then stay tuned for more developments.

Page 12

And here is the final page to my short comic story. This is my first attempt at doing a comic book story and to actually draw one out in the same manner I would if I were commissioned to do this. Although there are a few mistakes made, such as not leaving much space for text and so forth, I feel that this has been a successful project. Hopefully we can get this comic as a online pdf or a flash book or something. Anyways hope you have enjoyed reading this short story.

This page contains the other crossover with Ondrej's story, with his truck just being visible on the last panel in the background, with the use of his brown colour to connect the two stories, in which Ondrej's gang of Sicilian's are bootlegging whiskey and get a spooked when they initially suspect the cops are coming after them.

This page has the crossover between mine and Benj's story clearly indicated with the use of an additional colour that runs through Benj's story and the inclusion of his character detective Lawrence Shaw.

Chapter 3 'RED'

So here it is the title page of the story I did for our uni project on doing a comic book about 30's gangsters in Chicago. My story focuses on two bank robbers who have a Bonnie and Clyde edge to them ie they are romantically involved and have a life of crime together. This story follows the story exploring a small part of the lives of Rick 'Red' Blaine and Anna 'Kitty' Bacall, with their two associates Harvey 'Dint' Egan and Fred 'Big Six' Whalley. This story came from a dream I had awhile back now and of course condensed and made a more refined story that would allow crossovers to occur with the other two stories that occur in the comic book so watch out for those. Anyways I shall be posting one page at a time so tomorrow shall be page 1 so stay tuned as it happens.
